There are many types of gps vehicle tracking systems on the market. We carry at least 15 different units - so which one to get is the question most of our customers ask. There are real-time gps and passive (data logging) gps tracking devices.

Real-Time vs Passive GPS

A real-time system allows you to track the vehicle every 15 seconds and know exactly where it is 24/7 via the internet, no software needed (just your browser) and require monthly service fees. The real-time can even be tracked from an internet enabled cell phone. The device will cost you around $475 plus $39 per month service fee - sounds like alot but compared to the cost of a full-time private investigator billing a weekly rate of $500 a week times 4 weeks, it makes a lot of sense.

A passive gps tracking device or datalogger requires you to place the gps under the vehicle or in the vehicle and then retrieve it to download the info to your computer. There are no monthly fees and the product cost is less than a real-time system. The data is the same as the real-time system. You get start and stop times, speed of vehicle, street addresses, satellite photos and a "bread crumb" trail. The software allows you to playback everywhere the vehicle has been! The unit comes with the software and everything you need. The dataloggers will cost around $300.
